BATTLING BISHOPS SHUTOUT
AVERETT 4-0, TO FACE HORNETS IN SEMIFINAL
BURLINGTON, N.C. --
The 9th-seeded NC Wesleyan softball team has fought
its way into semifinal action with a 4-0 shutout of Averett University
on Saturday afternoon at Springwood Park. The Bishops, who dropped their
opening game of the tournament, have now won four straight contests to
set up a Sunday morning semifinal versus #2 Shenandoah University. The
winner will take on undefeated top-seed Christopher Newport in the
championship at Noon.
Wesleyan hurler Ashley Driver
(5-10) tossed a complete game shutout, scattering six hits and striking
out one.
The
Bishops got all the offense they would need with a two-run single by
Alexis Gallop in the fourth. NCWC went on to plate insurance runs in the
fifth and seventh innings for the 4-0 final.
Six
different Bishops (13-26) tallied a hit in the contest with Carla
Pridgen scoring two runs. Emily Atkinson was 2-for-3 to pace the Cougars
(20-17), while Sandra Dennison suffered the loss in the circle.
