BURLINGTON, N.C. --
The N.C. Wesleyan Battling Bishops
defeated the Ferrum Panthers 5-2
on Saturday morning to
avoid elimination from the 2009 USA South
Softball
Tournament in Burlington. With the win,
Wesleyan will play
the loser of Peace and Christopher
Newport at 2 p.m.
Ferrum
(18-21) got on the board first in the top of the third
with a solo homerun to right field
from Jasmine Parker to
take the 1-0 lead. N.C. Wesleyan
(11-26) was quick to
answer in the bottom of the inning
with four runs and five
hits including doubles from Kate
Braun (pictured) and
Payton Gordon.
The
Panthers gained one more back in the top of the fifth with an
RBI-double from
Hannah Shumaker,
but the Bishops again countered in
the bottom half of the inning
with an RBI-single by Alexis Gallop to score Dani Abbey.
N.C.
Wesleyan pitcher Tiffany McCord (2-1)
earned the win,
giving up two runs on seven
hits in the
complete game effort.
