BURLINGTON, N.C. -- The Captains of Christopher Newport
University defeated the
Peace College Pacers
by a 3-1 score in Saturday's USA South Tournament
action.
Peace will now
face North
Carolina Wesleyan at 2:00 p.m. in an elimination game.
CNU advances to the
winners' bracket semifinal versus Shenandoah.
Captain
Kristen Rowe (19-1) allowed one run
on five hits and recorded 10 strikeouts
in
the win. Peace’s Ashley Stansbury
(13-9) took the loss giving up six hits and one run
with three strikeouts and two walks.
The
Pacers opened the game with a one-run lead on an RBI-single from
Amanda
Rothwell. Leadoff batter Courtney
Long scored on the play after advancing to first on a
walk and to second on a sacrifice
form Amanda Beach.
Both
teams went scoreless in the next four frames. Christopher Newport’s
Emily
Garcia led off the bottom of three with a
single. She advanced two bases on a passed
ball and a sacrifice from teammate Megan
Morris. Ashley Mani scored Garcia on a
single to left. Mary Kennedy reached on a fielder’s
choice and stole second. Two
errors from the plate scored two to put the
Captain’s up by one. Taylor Morgan moved
the runners around with a single up the middle,
and Jessie Atkinson pushed the lead
to two with an RBI-single to seal the win.
The
Pacers battled in the seventh but left the tying runs on base.
