HORNETS TOP BISHOPS 6-0,
ADVANCE TO CHAMPIONSHIP
BURLINGTON, N.C. --
The #2 seeded Shenandoah
University Hornets (28-10) shut out #9 North Carolina
Wesleyan (13-26) 6-0 to
advance to the USA South
tournament championship
on Sunday morning at
Springwood Park. The Hornets will face league
leader Christopher Newport
today at 11:30 a.m.
Pitcher
of the year Katie Haskins (16-3) earned the
win for the Hornets allowing only one
hit with four
strikeouts. Brooke Over earned a save
with one hit in
three innings. Brooke Davis took the
loss for the
Bishops giving up eight hits in three
innings pitched.
After
opening
the game with a perfect defensive
frame, the Hornets picked up one run on two hits and
one error in the
bottom of the first. Kat Pruiett reached first on an error
and was was
moved to second by a Catherine Buerle single to
left. Jesse Khosravi-Heins the scored
Pruiett with a single
of her own to put the Hornets on the board with a 1-0 lead.
The
Hornets opened up their lead with four more runs in the third. Haskins
(pictured) hit
a leadoff single then scored on a
two-RBI single from Lauren Wall. Buerle also scored
on the play to push the lead to three.
Ashley Plaugher and Marlee Camplese added two
more runs, each with an RBI-single.
Tiffany
McCord moved to the circle for Wesleyan and put her team back in the
dugout
after four quick at bats.
Brooke
Over entered to pitch for Shenandoah in the fifth to
earn the save. She allowed
three hits, including two in the seventh, but Dani Abbey
and Alexis Gallop were left on
base to keep the Bishops at bay and seal
the win.
