BURLINGTON, N.C. -- The 2nd-seeded
Shenandoah softball team defeated Ferrum,
2-0, in the Hornets' first game of the 2009 USA
South Softball Tournament. Pitcher Katie Haskins pitched a
complete game five-hitter, striking out
eight. Shenandoah stays in the winner’s bracket
and will face #3 Greensboro at Noon on Saturday
,while 7th-seeded
Ferrum moves to the loser’s bracket and
will play at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.
Shenandoah (26-9) got on the board first in the bottom of the
second. Marlee Chaplese started the inning with a single to
shortstop. Two batters later, Lauren Wall
singled to center field and moved the runner to second.
After a successful double-steal, Katie Bundrick
grounded to second to score Camplese and give the Hornets the 1-0
lead.
Shenandoah added an insurance run in the
bottom of the fourth when Katie Bundrick singled to score Plaughter.
Ferrum (18-20) produced five hits but could not get on the board.
With the win, Haskins moves to 15-2 on the year.
