Wesleyan softball
drops USAC twinbill at Christopher Newport
Newport News, VA -
The 13th-ranked softball squad
of Christopher Newport University managed a USA South
doubleheader sweep of North Carolina Wesleyan on Tuesday
afternoon at Captains Park. CNU overcame a late 5-3
deficit for a 13-5 win in game one before earning a 7-1
victory in game two. The two losses leave the Bishops
with a 7-15 overall record and 2-8 league mark.
Christopher Newport is now 25-3 on the season and
leading the USA South with an 11-1 conference record.
CNU hurler Kristen
Rowe picked up the win in both games. Rowe entered the
opener in relief and went the distance in the nightcap,
tallying nine strikeouts along the way. She is now 15-0
on the season.
In the opener, CNU
trailed by a 5-3 score heading into the bottom of the
fifth inning. A two-run double by Wesleyan's Jena
McFadden in the second inning had given the Bishops a
2-1 advantage, and after the Captains plated a pair of
runs in the bottom of the frame, NCWC's Dani Abbey put
the Bishops back on top in the third with a bases loaded
two-run single to left. An RBI-groundout by Alexis
Gallop led to the Bishops' two-run advantage after four
complete.
The Captains,
however, erupted for seven runs in the fifth and then
ended the game in the sixth with a three-run double by
Ashley Mani. Brooke Davis (4-7) took the loss for the
Bishops, giving up seven runs (four earned) on nine hits
in four innings of work.
In the finale,
Wesleyan plated its only run in the top of the first on
an RBI-single to center by Meredith Mills. The Captains
tied the game in the bottom of the inning and went on to
out-score the Bishops 6-0 the rest of the way.
Ashley Driver (3-7)
suffered the loss, allowing seven runs on 12 hits in the
complete game effort.
Wesleyan returns to
action on Thursday at home when the Bishops host
Virginia Wesleyan College. Game one of the
non-conference twinbill is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m.,
and both games will feature live audio and in-game
statistics.
