Captains down Bishops in league volleyball action, 3-1

Rocky Mount, NC - Christopher Newport's Brittany Collins tallied 28 assists, 12 service aces, 11 digs, and five kills in leading her Captain volleyball squad to a 3-1 win over homestanding North Carolina Wesleyan on Wednesday night in Everett Gym.  Game scores were 30-19, 24-30, 30-17, and 30-24.  With the win, CNU improves to 18-9 overall, 8-1 in conference play.  The Bishops now stand at 9-15 on the season, 1-8 in USA South action.

With both teams recording impressive hitting percentages in game one, the difference proved to be Collins' serving.  She recorded six of her twelve aces in the game, propelling the Captains to a 30-19 win and 1-0 match lead.  CNU hit .556 in the game compared to the Bishops' .400.

Wesleyan stormed back in game two behind four kills and two aces from sophomore Sydney Bens.  Up 24-23, the Bishops had four different players combine for consecutive kills and watched as two Captain attack errors ended the game and tied the match at 1-1.

CNU responded with 15 and 16 kills in games three and four, respectively, to take the 3-1 match win. Wesleyan recorded a .014 hitting percentage over the same span.

Ellen Koch paced CNU with a team-high 13 kills, while Kenzie Lockie had 11.  Koch also had a team-high 12 digs.  As a team, the Captains benefited from 22 service aces.

For the Bishops, Bens finished with 13 kills and 13 digs.  Freshman teammate Brittany Insley, the current USA South Rookie of the Week, tallied a game-high 15 kills.  Caitlin George added 32 assists.
