Meredith overcomes early deficit to
down Bishops, 67-61
Rocky Mount, NC -
In Wednesday night's USA South basketball action, Meredith
College used a 12-3 run over the final four minutes of the
game to down homestanding North Carolina Wesleyan by a 67-61
score in Everett Gymnasium. The Bishops (4-14, 2-9 USAC),
who led by as many as 10 on three occasions in the first
half, shot just 28 percent in the second half and missed
five of their last six free throws. The league win is the
first for the Angels (5-16, 1-13 USAC).
The Bishops came out on fire in the first
half as sophomore Gretchen Tobias hit her first five shots
from the floor and senior Essence Chambers knocked down a
trio of three-point attempts. Up 29-19 with 5:50 left
in the period, the Angels put together a 11-4 run to pull
within three at the break, 33-30.
In the second half, Meredith went up six
at 48-42 with 13:17 remaining only to see Wesleyan battle
back to tie the contest at 51-51 just three minutes later.
The Bishops proceeded to take a three-point lead at 58-55
with 4:25 left in regulation, but unfortunately, the Angels
would out-score NCWC 12-3 the rest of the way thanks to two
driving lay-ups and an 8-for-10 showing at the charity
stripe.
MC's Brittany Cornelius led all scorers
with 31 points and 13 rebounds, while Megan Rahn chipped in
15 of her own. The Bishops were paced by Chambers' 21 points
and five assists. Tobias finished with 16 points and six
boards.
Meredith held a 51-32 rebounding
advantage and connected on 21 free throw attempts. The
Bishops were just 11-of-22 at the charity stripe on the
night.
Wesleyan returns to action on Sunday when
Mary Baldwin visits Rocky Mount. Game time is
slated for 2:00 p.m. in Everett Gymnasium. The Squirrels
defeated the Bishops last Saturday by a 59-51 score.
