Chambers leads Bishop women to 72-61 win over MBC

Rocky Mount, NC - Behind 24 points, seven steals, and four assists by senior Essence Chambers (pictured), the women's basketball team of North Carolina Wesleyan downed Mary Baldwin by a 72-61 score on Sunday afternoon in Everett Gym. The Bishops, who fell 65-52 at Shenandoah on Saturday, scored 45 points in the second half to secure their third league win of the season.

On Sunday, Wesleyan shot just 29 percent in the first half but forced the Squirrels to commit 13 turnovers en route to a 27-23 lead at the half. Chambers led all scorers with 14 points in the period.

The Bishops opened up the second half with a 14-3 run over the first five minutes to go up 41-27 with 14:54 remaining. They went on to lead by as many as 19 on four occasions before forging their biggest advantage at 62-42 with just over five minutes left.

MBC (4-17, 2-12 USAC) fought back behind the inspired play of Christie Hamilton, but the Squirrels would get no closer than 10 the rest of the way.

In addition to Chambers' 24, Gretchen Tobias added 13 points and three assists. Freshman Angel Smith also reached double figures with 10 points and eight rebounds, while sophomore Desiree' Driver recorded eight points, seven rebounds, three steals, and two blocks.

Hamilton led MBC with 22 points and six boards.

On Saturday in Winchester, Wesleyan used an early 12-1 run to take a 20-10 lead at the 11:35 mark of the first half. Shenandoah, however, scored 14 of the next 16 points to re-take the lead with 5:23 remaining. The Hornets extended this advantage to 10 points by halftime (37-27) and held at least a seven-point advantage for the rest of the game.

Chambers again paced the Battling Bishops with a team-high 16 points, while Tobias and Driver chipped in 11 apiece. Smith rounded out NCWC's double-figure scorers with 10 points off the bench.

Wesleyan (5-15, 3-10 USAC) returns to action on Wednesday evening when Christopher Newport University visits Rocky Mount. Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m. in Everett Gymnasium.
