Bishops open up USA South play with 57-42 win over Meredith

Raleigh, NC - Behind double-figure performances by Essence Chambers, Gretchen Tobias, and Desiree' Driver, the North Carolina Wesleyan women's basketball squad opened up USA South play on Tuesday night with a 57-42 win on the road at Meredith College. Leading the way was Chambers, who turned in a game-high 14 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, and four steals. Tobias and Driver (pictured) chipped in 12 and 10 points, respectively.  Wesleyan is now 2-5 overall, 1-0 in league play, while the Angels drop to 4-6 on the season, 0-3 in conference action.

Wesleyan never trailed as the Bishops opened up a 16-6 lead midway through the first half and held a slim 24-19 halftime advantage.  Chambers netted 10 points in the period, while as a team, the Bishops were able to capitalize by scoring 10 points off 17 Angel turnovers.

In the second half, Wesleyan shot 54 percent from the field to put the game out of reach.  Freshman Angel Smith provided a spark for the Bishops off the bench with nine points.

For Meredith, Megan Rahn had 11 points and Kristin Stewart 10 rebounds.  The Angels shot just 24 percent in the second half.

Wesleyan continues USA South action on Thursday night when Peace College visits Rocky Mount. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m. in Everett Gymnasium.
