Bishops open up USA South play with 57-42 win over Meredith

- Behind double-figure performances by Essence Chambers,
Gretchen Tobias, and Desiree' Driver, the North Carolina
Wesleyan women's basketball squad opened up USA South play
on Tuesday night with a 57-42 win on the road at Meredith
College. Leading the way was Chambers, who turned in a
game-high 14 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, and four
steals. Tobias and Driver (pictured) chipped in 12 and 10
points, respectively. Wesleyan is now 2-5 overall, 1-0
in league play, while the Angels drop to 4-6 on the season,
0-3 in conference action.
Wesleyan never trailed as the Bishops opened up a 16-6 lead
midway through the first half and held a slim 24-19 halftime
advantage. Chambers netted 10 points in the period,
while as a team, the Bishops were able to capitalize by
scoring 10 points off 17 Angel turnovers.
In the
second half, Wesleyan shot 54 percent from the field to put
the game out of reach. Freshman Angel Smith provided a
spark for the Bishops off the bench with nine points.
For
Meredith, Megan Rahn had 11 points and Kristin Stewart 10
rebounds. The Angels shot just 24 percent in the
second half.
Wesleyan continues USA South action on Thursday night when
Peace College visits Rocky Mount. Game time is slated for
7:00 p.m. in Everett Gymnasium.
