Lady Bishops honor lacrosse seniors, fall to Averett 19-9

Rocky Mount, NC - Despite being down only 6-4 at the half, the Lady Bishop lacrosse squad could not overcome a 9-0 run by Averett in the final period, falling to the Cougars by a 19-9 score at Scalf Field.  Prior to the match, head coach Lorin Smith honored seniors Joanna Bare and Rachael Stansbury (all pictured).  Playing the final match of its inaugural season, Wesleyan also recognized 2006 Parent's Day.  The Lady Bishops end their first season with a 3-12 mark, including a 1-5 record in USA South play.

With the win, Averett clinched a spot in next week's conference tournament.  The Cougars end their regular season slate with an 8-6 overall record, including a 3-3 league mark.

NCWC's Sarah Smith notched two first-half goals, as did Buffy Casto, to pace Wesleyan.  AU's Darcie Jones and Vanessa Jordan each had two scores in leading the Cougars to a slim 6-4 lead at intermission.

The difference in the match came with the first 15 minutes of the final period.  The Cougars scored nine unanswered goals to start the half, led by Jordan and Jones who tallied three goals and three assists, respectively.

Down 15-4, the Lady Bishops would out-score Averett 5-4 the rest of the way, but it was too little to late as they could not recover from the Cougar run.

For AU, Jordan finished with nine goals and an assist, while Jones tallied four goals and a program-record five assists.  Dawn Sheets recorded nine saves in goal en route to the win.

The Bishops were led by Casto's four goals.  Smith finished with three, while Allie Stylc notched two goals and an assist.  Goalie Cary Trump turned in a solid performance with a season-high 20 saves.
