Lady Bishop
lacrosse falls in inaugural game, 19-7
Rocky
Mount, NC
- The North Carolina Wesleyan College lacrosse team
kicked off its 2006 inaugural slate on Tuesday when
the Lady Bishops hosted Christopher Newport
University at Scalf Field. The Captains, who
were picked to win the USA South title, were played
closely by the youthful Bishops and held a slim 11-7
lead at the break before securing the 19-7 victory.
NCWC's Buffy Casto scored four goals, including the
program's first at the 24:08 mark in the first half.
Allie Stylc was credited with the assist.
The Captains jumped
out to an 11-3 lead, but Wesleyan responded with
four unanswered goals over the final five minutes of
the first period to cut the CNU lead to just four at
the break.
Casto started the
rally with her fourth goal of the game, followed by
two goals by freshman Haley Griffiths. Sarah
Smith netted her first collegiate goal with just 48
seconds left before intermission.
Unfortunately for
the Bishops, it would be the final goal of the day
as CNU turned up its defensive pressure in the
second half.
For CNU, Kristyn
Hankins scored a game-high six goals, which included
the game-winner.
The Lady Bishops
will be back in action this weekend when they host
Washington (MD) on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
Wesleyan will host Bridgewater College on Sunday at
1:00 p.m.
