Casto leads Lady Bishop lacrosse to program's first victory

Rocky Mount, NC - Freshman Buffy Casto (pictured) scored six goals, including the game-winner, and recorded two assists in leading her Lady Bishop lacrosse squad to the program's first-ever victory on Sunday, 12-6 over Bridgewater College at Scalf Field.  The two squads fought to a 4-4 tie at intermission, but the Bishops responded with eight second half goals to secure the win. NC Wesleyan is now 1-2 on the season, while the Eagles drop to 0-2 overall.

Bridgewater took an early 2-1 lead behind unassisted goals from Lindsay Snyder and Emily Bauer.  Wesleyan's first score came at the hands of Sarah Smith on an assist from Mikey Case.

Casto then took things in her own hands and tallied three unassisted goals in a six-minute span to give the Bishops their first lead at 4-2 with 17:52 remaining in the period.  Snyder and Bauer responded for the Eagles with another goal apiece to knot the score at 4-4 going into the break.

The second half saw Wesleyan strike quickly with another Casto goal less than a minute into the half.  Allie Stylc was credited with one of her three assists on the day.  Casto returned the favor when she delivered a perfect pass to Stylc at the 23:16 mark for Stylc's first goal of the contest.  The two were not done as they connected on two more goals, including the eventual game-winner at 23:01.

Bauer added another goal for Bridgewater, as did Sarah Peacher, but it would all the Lady Bishop defense would allow in the period as Wesleyan closed the game on a 5-0 run.

During the run, NCWC's Haley Griffiths tallied two goals, while senior Rachael Stansbury notched her first career score.  Bryanne Godfrey added her first assist.

For the game, Wesleyan out-shot Bridgewater 24-20.  Freshman Cary Trump picked up the win after recording nine saves.  Jennifer Midgette turned in eight saves for the Eagles.

The Lady Bishops will be back in action on Thursday when they host Randolph-Macon at 4:00 p.m.
