Bryn Mawr survives Bishop lacrosse in 13-8 victory

Bryn Mawr, PA - In Saturday’s lacrosse action, the host Owls of Bryn Mawr College opened up their 2006 season by defeating non-conference opponent North Carolina Wesleyan, 13-8. Despite the frigid temperatures and wind, Bryn Mawr stayed hot throughout the contest, out-shooting North Carolina Wesleyan 28-16 and causing 35 turnovers.  Senior Jen Lam racked up a team-best four goals for the Owls.  The Bishops fell to 1-4 with the loss.

Sophomore midfielder Zoe Fuller-Young got the Owls' offense rolling, scoring Bryn Mawr's first goal just over 30 seconds into the contest. After Jen Lam tallied her first score of the day and Wesleyan's Buffy Casto scored a goal, Fuller-Young added another score to give the Owls a 3-1 advantage with 16:35 remaining in the opening period.

At the 6:40 mark, sophomore Moriah Scott scored a goal, while Fuller-Young assisted a goal by junior midfielder Allison McMahon with 4:42 left to give Bryn Mawr a 5-2 lead.

Casto notched her third goal of the half 32 seconds later, but sophomores Greta Flaherty and Stephanie Wujcik responded with unassisted goals in the final minute of the opener to put the Owls ahead 7-3 at the intermission.

Bryn Mawr maintained control in the final period, due in part to three goals by Lam, all coming on free position shots. Freshman midfielder Georgia Lawrence, Flaherty and McMahon also scored unassisted goals in the second half to help lead Bryn Mawr to the 13-8 victory.

Casto added three more scores in the final period en route to a game-high six goals. Allie Stylc scored the Bishops' other two goals on the day, while both recorded assists.

At goal, freshman Steph Hilton collected seven saves and her first collegiate win in 60 minutes of action, while the Bishops' Cary Trump had 14 saves, also in 60 minutes of play.

The Lady Bishops return to action on Sunday when they travel to Wesley College for a 2:00 p.m. contest.
