Trump leads Lady Bishop lacrosse to first USA South win

Rocky Mount, NC - In USA South lacrosse action, the Lady Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan picked up their first-ever conference win, downing Ferrum College by a 13-5 score at Scalf Field. Freshman goalie Cary Trump (pictured) recorded ten saves and earned her second win in goal for Bishops, who are now 2-7 overall, 1-2 in USA South play.  The Panthers now stand at 2-5 on the season and remain winless in league play at 0-4.

Wesleyan jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first seven minutes of the game.  Buffy Casto started the scoring with an unassisted goal at the 28:46 mark.  Haley Griffiths and Sarah Smith followed with their first goals of the contest on two assists from Allie Stylc.

Ferrum battled back to score three of the next four goals on two goals by Stephanie Perih and one by Kerry Toomey.  The Bishops took the 4-3 lead into the break.

Perih scored the first goal of the second half to knot the score at 4-4, but the Lady Bishops exploded to score nine of the game's final ten goals to put the game out of reach.  Smith scored what proved to be the eventual game-winner with 18:39 remaining.

Casto led all scorers with five goals and an assist, while Smith and Griffiths each tallied three goals apiece.  Stylc chipped in with one goal and three assists, while Lauren Stearns connected on her first goal of the season.  Mikey Case added an assist.

For the Panthers, Perih finished with four goals, while goalie Jana Rodriguez tallied eight saves.

The Lady Bishops continue USA South play at Methodist College on Tuesday.  Game time is slated for 4:00 p.m.
