NCWC lacrosse wraps up regular season at St. Andrews

Laurinburg, NC - St. Andrews Presbyterian College started the scoring just 12 seconds into the game and never trailed en route to a 20-5 women’s lacrosse victory over visiting North Carolina Wesleyan College on Wednesday afternoon. Eight different Knights scored as SAPC improved to 5-10 on the season. The Battling Bishops wrapped up their 2007 regular season slate with a 3-12 record.

SAPC's Corey Whitbeck won the opening draw control and headed straight to the NCWC cage for a 1-0 Knights' lead just 12 seconds into the contest. St. Andrews added three more goals in the opening four minutes to take a 4-0 lead that they never relinquished.

St. Andrews won 12-of-13 draw controls in the first half to maintain control of the ball for the majority of the opening 30 minutes, forging a 10-2 lead at the break.

The Knights scored the first five goals of the second half and cruised to the 15-goal victory. Sophomore Katie Wright led St. Andrews offensively with seven points, including a hat trick and a game-high four assists.

The Knights dominated the scorebook by taking more shots, 58-13; scooping up more ground balls, 34-17; winning more draw controls, 19-8; and committing fewer turnovers, 35-25.

Eryn McCaffrey made five saves on eight Wesleyan shots-on-goal to earn her fifth win of the season. Sophomore Cary Trump stopped an impressive 22 shots for the visitors.

Katelyn Guinn and senior Allie Stylc each had two goals for the Bishops.

Previously on Tuesday, Wesleyan dropped its final USA South contest of the season by a 14-10 score at Averett University.  The Bishops trailed just 6-5 at intermission and managed to tie the game early in the second half, but a 3-0 Cougar run put AU on top for good.  NCWC finished 1-5 in league play.

Wesleyan will now prepare for next week's USA South Conference Tournament.  As the sixth seed, the Bishops will travel to third-seeded Methodist College in first round play.
