Bishops come up short in second half rally, fall 17-10

Rocky Mount, NC - Despite out-scoring their opponents 7-5 in the second half, the Bishop lacrosse team of North Carolina Wesleyan could not overcome a 12-3 halftime deficit in falling to the College of Notre Dame (MD) by a 17-10 score on Sunday at Scalf Field.  The loss is Wesleyan’s fifth straight, and the Bishops now stand at 1-5 on the season.  The Gators remain undefeated at 3-0 overall.

NCWC’s Katelyn Guinn scored the game’s first goal less than three minutes into the contest off of a Mikey Case assist, but Notre Dame proceeded to put together a 6-0 run that saw five different Gators tally goals.

Freshman Sarah Matulich ended the Bishops’ scoring drought with a free position goal at the 15:25 mark that made the score 6-2 in favor of CND.  The Gators, however, put together another huge run that saw them out-score Wesleyan 6-1 over the final 15 minutes of the period.  Notre Dame took the 12-3 lead into the break.

The Gators scored the first two goals of the second half, but this time it was Wesleyan that countered with a 7-3 run of its own.  Unfortunately for the Bishops, it was too little too late as the clock became their enemy down the stretch.  Matulich, Case, and Allie Stylc score the game’s final three goals en route to the 17-10 final.

For Notre Dame, Tina Money tallied five goals and three assists to lead all scorers, while Anna Shippen, Sara Breidenbaugh, and Lauren Terry each recorded three goals.

Matulich led the Bishop offense with four goals.  Case finished with two goals and an assist.

The Gators out-shot Wesleyan 38-17 in the contest.  NCWC’s Sarah Seligman suffered the loss but made 15 saves on the day.

Wesleyan returns to USA South action on Wednesday when the Bishops host Greensboro College at 4:00 p.m.
