Bishop lacrosse picks up road wins over Ferrum and SBC

Sweet Briar, VA - The Bishop lacrosse squad of North Carolina Wesleyan earned two road wins this weekend, beginning on Saturday when they earned their first USA South victory of the season by a 9-7 score over Ferrum.  Wesleyan then downed Sweet Briar College on Sunday, 13-11.  Katelyn Guinn (pictured) paced the Bishops with seven goals and two assists in the two matches, including a season-high six goals against SBC.  The Bishops, who have now won two straight for the first time in the program’s brief history, are 3-6 on the season and 1-2 in league play.

On Saturday, Wesleyan and Ferrum found themselves tied 4-4 at intermission.

FC’s Sarah Kaye gave the Panthers an early 5-4 lead in the second half with a goal just 32 seconds into the period, but Wesleyan responded with a 3-0 run that saw senior Allie Stylc notch two goals and Mikey Case one.  All three goals were unassisted as the Bishops pushed ahead 7-5.

Ferrum battled back with scores by Stephanie Perih and Kerry Toomey to tie the game at 7-7 with 3:01 remaining in regulation.  Stylc, however, answered with the eventual game-winner at the 2:19 mark, and Guinn’s goal with 16 seconds left sealed the 9-7 conference win.

Stylc finished with four goals for Wesleyan, while freshman Sarah Matulich added two of her own.  Perih led the Panthers with three goals.

Defensively, NCWC’s Sarah Seligman earned the win in goal after facing 17 shots and making six saves.  FC’s Crystal Heglar faced 21 Bishops shots and made eight saves in the losing effort.

Wesleyan road the momentum of Saturday’s game to a second straight win on Sunday, a 13-11 victory at Sweet Briar.

Guinn paced the Bishops with six goals, while Stylc, Case, and Matulich added two scores apiece.  Additionally, Matulich chipped in two assists.  Lauren Stearns rounded out Wesleyan’s scoring with her second goal of the weekend road trip.

Seligman earned her third win between the pipes.

The Bishops will return to action on Wednesday when they host USA South foe Methodist University.  Game time is slated for 4:00 p.m. at Scalf Field.
