The North Carolina Wesleyan College women’s soccer program has become one of
the top small college programs in the nation since it began in 1983. The
team has a record of 225 wins, 178 losses, and 27 ties over its 24-year
history.
We’ve reached the NCAA tournament ten times and were in the Final
Four in 1994. Our women were Conference Co-Champions in 1997 and won the Conference
Championship in 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001.
When you come to NCWC, you can be assured
you’ll be playing alongside some of the best women in the nation. The program has produced 31 All-South players, seven All-Americans and even the 1994 NCAA Division III National Player of the Year.
Academically, our student-athletes have received numerous awards including
nine Scholar-Athlete All-Region, Five Scholar-Athlete All-Americans and five
Verizon Academic All-Americans or All-District selections.
The most successful season to date was 1994 when the team won the NCAA South
Regional Championship and reached the NCAA Final Four in San Diego, CA. The
team also won the Conference Championship and compiled a final record
of 15-3-3.
More recently, 2001 was a successful season as well as the team finished
with a 14-6-2 record and received votes in the final regular season NSCAA/Adidas
National Poll. The team was also won the Conference Championship and advanced to
the the NCAA Southeast Regionals.
Why has our team been successful?
Our program is year round and is demanding both physically and mentally.
Athletically, we look for players that are skillful, hardworking and have a
strong desire to succeed. Most importantly, each team member must commit
herself to achieving the team’s academic and athletic goals.
Finally, our players are good people. We feel that the way players act off
the field is a direct reflection of how we perform on the field. We want
players that will make the whole community proud. Our players are our
program and we demand that they act in a first class manner.
The Bishops were recognized by Athletic Management magazine by receiving an
ATLANTA award in the "successful teams" category in 1995. The award was
given to those who serve as positive role models in women's athletics.
