NCWC women's tennis tallies first victory, defeats Salem 6-3

Rocky Mount, NC - In Sunday afternoon women's tennis action, North Carolina Wesleyan tallied its first victory of the season by defeating Salem College 6-3 at the NCWC Tennis Complex. Sophomores Jamie Galasso (pictured) and Leila Heinonen turned in both doubles and singles wins, as did teammates Tija Riley and Joanne Youngblood. Wesleyan is now 1-2 on the season.

Wesleyan took a 2-1 lead in doubles play as Galasso/Heinonen recorded an 8-3 win over SC's Michala Michaux/Kim Wisen at the top seed. Riley/Youngblood teamed for their first career doubles win at the 3rd seed, downing the Spirit tandem of Amy Allison/Jessica Hunter by an 8-6 score.

In singles play, Galasso was a straight-set winner at #1 singles over Anna Devoe, while Heinonen moved to 2-0 on the week with a hard-fought 6-0, 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-5) win over Michaux at the 2nd seed.  Riley and Youngblood recorded NCWC's final two points at the 5th and 6th slots, respectively, as each won in three sets.

The Bishops return to action next Saturday at home versus Randolph-Macon College. Match time is slated for 2:00 p.m.
