The Art faculty at North Carolina Wesleyan College are committed to providing a quality learning experience where the student will grow through formal scholarship, writing, hands-on studio practicum, and creative expression.

Art appreciation (A-101) introduces the student to the man-made visual world and examines the ethos and inspiration of the creative impulse.

Art Education (A-302) investigates learning theory, art methods, and offers practicum for future teachers.

Studio courses ( A-104, -105, -106, -200, -205, -300) have been designed to provide a structured hands-on sequence for an Art Minor, as well as an elective for those students who simply enjoy drawing, painting, and making sculpture. Practical processes, materials, and techniques are emphasized for their cross-over benefits as life skills for personal and career needs. They include sculptural construction from wood to metal, drawing development from black ink line to shading with colored pencils, commercial design packaging and typography to computer websites, and painting with acrylics and watercolor.

Wesleyan students have plenty of opportunities to see art exhibitions, meet and talk with visiting artists, as well as study the College’s specialized collections, such as the Mayan ceramics in the Four Sisters Gallery.
