OBJECTIVES:
This writing course is intended to enhance students’
writing and critical thinking skills. In
particular this course aims to increase students ability to construct cogent
arguments, to investigate various methods of providing evidence to support these
arguments, and to present all information in a reasoned and persuasive manner.
English 111 is a prerequisite for this course; both are required for
graduation. The objectives of the course are learning to:
interpret readings accurately and support that interpretation in a well-structured and well-developed essay
summarize and paraphrase others’ words and ideas while avoiding plagiarism
draw inferences and understand the use of cause and effect
recognize false or invalid arguments
use logic to argue a point of view
quote directly from other sources
accurately document quoted material
prepare annotated bibliographies
further develop language usage, grammar, punctuation, and style.
REQUIREMENTS
· daily reading assignments
· short/objective quizzes over the day’s reading assignment
· 4 formal essays (multi-drafted)
· oral presentation(s)
· library activities
Students are responsible for completing all reading, writing, oral presentation, and library assignments. In addition, any student given extra tutoring assignments will be expected to fulfill this task as part of the course requirements. Final grades will be determined as follows:

ATTENDANCE:
The college’s attendance policy as described in the
catalogue will be used in this class.
TARDINESS:
Tardiness is defined as arriving in the classroom after the
roll has be taken. Three lates equal
one class absence.
DEADLINES:
All assignments are to be submitted at the beginning of
class on the due date. Late papers
will not be accepted unless prior arrangements have been made with the
professor.
All students must complete all the homework assignments.
Students who come to class unprepared may be asked to leave and will be
counted absent for that day.
ESSAY FORMAT:
All major writing projects or formal assignments must be
completed on a word processor in 12-point font. Multiple page assignments must be stapled.
When final projects are submitted, they must be accompanied by all
earlier drafts, notes, scribblings, etc.
CONFERENCES:
Individual conferences are for your benefit.
Please come to my office on time with your complete draft ready for
discussion. Each conference
appointment you miss equals one class absence.
PLAGIARISM:
Plagiarism, whether deliberate or otherwise, is the submission of someone else’s work as your own. This is academic dishonesty and the college’s policy (found on page … of the NCWC catalogue) will be enforced.
