What is a Citation to an Article?

A citation, sometimes called a reference, to an article is a group of information that identifies the journal or magazine in which the article can be found. An article citation may include:

  • the author(s) and title of an article
  • the title of the journal or magazine
  • the volume number, issue number, date, and pages of the issue in which the article appears

The above information is crucial for locating a journal or magazine in the library. You will first need to use the NCWC Periodicals Holdings Database, which lists magazines and journals that are owned by the College (the list is also available in print format - look for the yellow folders displayed in several locations in the library).

If the college does not own a particular journal or magazine that you need, you can still get the article by using the interlibrary loan service.

Below is an example of an article citation from the database Academic Search Elite. The important information necessary to locate this article either in the library or through interlibrary loan is:

Author (s): Haddad, Simon and Hilal Khashan

Title: Islam and Terrorism

Journal Title: Journal of Conflict Resolution

Volume Number: 46

Issue Number: 6

Page Numbers: 812 - 829

ISSN: 0022-0027 (This number is very important if you need to get an article through interlibrary loan).
