Literature Review

Article 1: Drugs getting into federal prisons too easily.

Prison staff are the main ways drugs are getting into prisons. They see the need for treatment of the problem. No one ever has enough money to carry out the needed tasks.

Article 2: Prisons clamp down on drug smuggling.

Sniffer dogs are being used in Northern Ireland’s top security prison to crack down on drug snuggling. Mr. Jeffrey Donaldson should have checked with police to see if they would cooperate instead of hoping.

Article 3: Fifty federal inmates died from drug overdoses since 1997 and more than 1,100 drug finds were reported in federal prison since 2000. These people have a poor method of checking people.

Article 4: There were 34 prison staff arrests on drug cases from 1997 through 2001 and 93 drug-related employee misconduct cases. Very good research and very straight-forward.

Article 5: Drug use in prison

Street studies conducted in Miami, Florida have demonstrated that the amount of crime drug users commit is considerable, that drug-related crime is at times quite violent. This article gives you and in depth look at the war on drugs.

Article 6: Drug abuse treatment in criminal justice settings.

In the ensuing years, prison based treatment programs remained extremely few in number, and the programs that did exist mostly involved simple detoxification. This method probably worked, but you cannot break a habit in a day.

Article 7: Drug smuggling a federal prison problem.

Officials at the U.S. Bureau of Prisons failed to adequately search visitors, cameras, monitors and staff to properly supervise inmate-visiting sessions, and had taken insufficient measures to prevent drug smuggling by staff. This seems like a good program, but they have complications.

Article 8: Drug substitution treatment and needle exchange programs in German and European prisons.

In German prisons and those throughout Europe, drug use and health problems are widespread. This article is difficult and seems to miss the point.
