Policies

Room Entry

A college representative may enter a Residence Hall room for the following reasons:

Maintenance Requests

If you have a maintenance problem you should report it as soon as possible by calling the Hoamline at x5260.  All requests are handled as quickly as possible.  If your request has not been completed within 2 business days, please contact the Director of Residence Life.

If you have an emergency at night or on the weekend, please contact the RA on duty.

Community Damages

All damages done in common areas are billed to all students collectively if the guilty person(s) cannot be found.

The billed amount will be added to your student account at the end of each semester.

Bills are determined by which students could reasonably have had access to the damage.  Damage to bathrooms are billed to individual floors.  Damage on 1st floor, the laundry room, and stairwells will be billed to the entire building.

Exterminator

The exterminator comes to campus the second Tuesday of each month.  Students will be reminded in advance.

The exterminator must go into every room to spray.  There can be no exceptions.  Students are not permitted to deny entry to the exterminator.  If the exterminator does not spray in every room it will increase the likelihood of insects and other pests for everyone.

Appliances

Air conditioners, ceiling fans, waterbeds, and portable heaters are prohibited in student rooms.

If you have an excessive amount of appliances in your room, you may be asked to remove some appliances to avoid overtaxing the electrical system.

Microwaves and Cooking

Cooking is not permitted in the Residence Halls.  Microwaves, gas or charcoal grills, propane stoves, electric frying plans, open coils such as toasters, George Foreman grills, hot plates, sandwich makers, and deep fat cookers are not permitted.

There is at least one microwave available in each residence hall for your use.

Trash

Students are responsible for placing their trash in the cans on each floor.  If the item will not fit in the can, it should be taken to the dumpster outside.

While moving in and outall boxes and trash should be taken to the extra dumpsters that are provided.

Pets

The only pets that are allowed are fish.  You are responsible for making arrangements for your fish during hall closings.

Windows, Screens, and Roofs

No person or item is allowed to pass through any window or to be on any porch or roof.  All screens must remain in place at all times.

Bicycles

You may keep your bicycle in your room or in the rack outside of the hall.  Bicycles may not be stored in public areas, such as hallways or stairwells.

Vehicles with gasoline engines are prohibited in the residence halls.

Visitation

You may have guests of the opposite sex in your room or hallway during the following hours:

Sunday through Thursday 9:00am – 12:00am
Friday and Saturday 9:00am – 2:00am

Guests

All guests must be escorted at all times.  You are responsible for the actions of your guests.  If your guest breaks a policy or damages any property, you will be held responsible.

Excessive visitation by a guest is not allowed and is determined by your Resident Director.

Quiet Hours and Courtesy Hours

Quiet hours and courtesy hours are in effect at the following times:

Courtesy Hours 9:00am – 10:00pm
Quiet Hours 10:00pm – 9:00am

During courtesy hours, all residents and guests in the hall must be courteous with regards to noise to the rest of the residential community.  During quiet hours, there should be no noise that can be heard outside the door or in adjacent rooms.  An any time, you may be asked or may ask someone else to go about activities in a quieter manner. 24 hour quiet hours are in effect during finals, and the Resident Directors may also put 24 quiet hours in effect if they deem it necessary.

Alcohol

Alcohol is only permitted if you are 21 years of age, and only in Boddie Hall and Carleton House.  If you are of age, then you may have alcohol in an individual’s room where no one present is less than 21 years old.  Alcohol is not permitted if anyone underage is present or in any common area.

If you lose money in a machine, please put an “Out of Order” sign on the machine and report it to the Student Life Office.  You will receive a refund of your money when it is reported.  All claims must be made within 5 business days of the time they occurred.

Vending

Snack, soda, and juice machines are available in each hall on the first floor in the lobby.  They are available 24 hours a day.

If you lose money in a machine, you should report it to the Business Office where the lost money will be refunded.

Vacuums

Each hall has at least one vacuum that is available for you to check-out if you have carpeting.  A vacuum can be checked out for a short period of time.  You are responsible for returning the vacuum.  If you fail to do so, you will be charged for its replacement.

Illegal Drugs

Public Areas

The lobby, stairwells, hallways, and any study rooms are considered public areas.  All personal belongings must be kept out of these areas.  Anything left may be confiscated or taken out as trash.  Any room furniture in the hallway will be removed and you will be charged for its replacement upon check-out.  All lounge furniture must remain in place.  Fines will be assessed to any student who removes lobby furniture.

Keys

Each student is issued a front door key and a room key.  All women are also issued a bathroom door key.  These keys must be returned when checking out of the room.

If you lose your key or have temporarily misplaced it, come to the Residence Life Office during business hours of 8:00am – 5:00pm to order a replacement.

If you are locked out, please contact your RD; if they are unavailable, please contact Security at x7374.  Lockout service is available only between 10 am and 12 midnight.

There is a $50 charge for any key that is lost or not returned.  The amount is billed to your student account.  Room locks are automatically changed whenever a key is lost.

You should not give your keys to anyone else.  This creates a safety risk for all other residents of the building.

Room Changes

You must remain in your assigned room for the first two weeks of each semester.  After this time, you may contact your Resident Director if you are interested in a room change.  The RD may require mediation between roommates before a change is allowed.

Single Rooms

Single rooms are available if a space permits to any student with at least 12 semester hours.  New freshman are not assigned single rooms.  You may apply during the lottery process during the spring or may put your name on the waiting list at any time by coming to the Residence Life Office.

Single rooms cost an additional fee that must be paid before the single room is granted.
