Residence Life
Living with a Roommate
Cleanliness and neatness go far in making residence hall life more enjoyable.
Make definite commitments on cleaning responsibilities. If roommates forget
about their turn to vacuum or clean the sink, a timely reminder often helps more
than complaints or threats.
The easiest way to avoid and solve problems is to talk about them. One roommate
may not realize something is bothering the other, and silence tends to make
things worse. Tact and communication will smooth out problems before they become
stumbling blocks in relationships.
Some people will gladly loan anything to anyone. Others do not lend nor borrow
under any circumstances. Find out how roommates feel about this issue. Establish
rules about what can and cannot be borrowed and under what conditions.
Get to know your roommate. Learn what interests are shared and build on them,
but remember to respect one another's individuality and privacy. Do not depend
on roommates to supply every emotional and social need. Make other friends and
get involved early in campus activities.
During the first week of school, roommates must decide what their study and
sleep schedules will be. Decide who sets and turns off the alarm, determine if
either person requires total darkness or quiet to sleep, and preferences for a
hot or cold environment. Discuss if either person is able to study with the
stereo or TV on or if total silence is needed. Discuss guests in the room. Make
sure there is a working agreement which suits both parties regarding
socialization and scheduling.
Remember that community living means cooperation and compromise. One resident
cannot dictate to others, and all things cannot conform to one person's life
style. Adjust conditions so that all parties can live comfortably. Sharing a
room can be interesting and beneficial if courtesy and respect are in large
supply.
If problems arise that cannot be solved by roommates, see the RA. RAs have
experience with these situations and gladly work with both roommates. Seeking
help early can usually resolve most problems.
